LOS ALAMITOS 10K/5K RUN AND 5K WALK "THE HISTORY OF THE RUNS" Originally conceived to coincide with the City of Los Alamitos' birthday, the Los Alamitos Marathon and 10K Run events, held during the late 1970's and the 1980's, united approximately 1,000 runners and 300 dedicated volunteers living in the City of Los Alamitos and surrounding cities. In 1988, due to the date change of the Long Beach Marathon and the emergence of the Los Angeles Marathon, the Los Alamitos Marathon and 10K Run event was restructured to include a 10K Run, a 5K Run, and a 5K Walk. The new format has annually attracted 1,700 runners, 500+ walkers, and 300 quality volunteers from approximately eleven area service clubs and church organizations. The yearly event has continued to provide not only a forum for local avid runners and walkers, but has also instilled a sense of pride and teamwork between the Los Alamitos City Council, the citizens of Los Alamitos, the Rossmoor Community Services District, and the local business community. Annually the Los Alamitos City Council issues a participation challenge to the Rossmoor Community Services District; the Parks and Recreation Commission challenges the other city commissions to participate. This year's event is presented by the City of Los Alamitos in cooperation with the California National Guard and Cancer Support Foundation, and numerous corporate sponsors - including Ganahl Lumber Company, Trend Offset Printing, the Original Fish Company, 24 Hour Fitness and Time Warner. Many participants will be using our event to "stretch out" for upcoming marathons. This year the Los Alamitos Rotary Club will be donating $550 to the wheelchair division award category in order for cash prizes to be given to the top four finishers. In addition, cash prizes for the top three males and the top three females of the 10K Run will total $1000. Along with the prize money, awards for up to fifth place will be handed out in eighteen age divisions. This year's net proceeds will be donated to offset operational costs of the USA Water Polo National Aquatic Center. This annual event has something for everyone! Whether you run, walk, or volunteer, the10K/5K "Race on the Base" is always a celebration! |
